I love Huerfano County. What isn’t there to love about an area in rural Colorado that nestles up against
the beautiful Huajatollas (Spanish Peaks), is flavored with a rich history of tradition and legends and is
home to some of the nicest people and best cooks I have ever met?
Working with an Art in Society grant, El Arte de Nuestros Abuelos (The Art of the Grandparents) whetted
my appetite to do more and more to honor the rich traditions and legacies of the elders of Huerfano
County. Armed with the belief that living is an art, the idea of sharing the stories and recipes of the
elders in our community kept bubbling up. I was fortunate to be contacted by a great organization,
Think 360 Arts (https://think360arts.org/) and they offered another opportunity for working with elders
in our community by engaging them in a creative project. It appeared this was the perfect chance to
pursue the idea of telling stories and sharing recipes and the Huerfano’s Happy Heart Cookbook came to
life, with the guidance of Annie Toro Lopez and her publishing company, High Prairie Press.
Please enjoy the fruits of our labor of love. Proceeds from every sale benefit Huajatolla Heritage
Foundation, a non-profit in Huerfano County that promotes cultural equity through art, education and
presentation.
Thank you for your purchase and Bon Appetite!
